My name is Roma Lewis and I am enrolled in an Arts and Science Associate Degree Course in the Liberal Arts Division of the Bermuda College on a part-time basis. I am currently employed as a Bermuda Government Postal worker. I attended the Whitney lnstitute and then went on to the Bermuda College Hotel Catering Craft lnstitute where I graduated in 1980. However, I always wanted to be journalist, so I made the decision to come back to school to pursue my goal in 2006.
I love to write and have interned at the Royal Gazette as a Junior Reporter, which was an experience I enjoyed immensely. While there I learned to write in a journalistic style and to hone my interviewing skills. Once I have finished at the Bermuda College my aim is to go on to an accredited school of Journalism and get my Bachelors Degree. I then intend to move on to my Masters toward a double major in History and Anthropology. My favourite class is sociology, because it involves aspects of social, cultural, and historical learning as it pertains to world issues and human interaction which I find fascinating. I hope to graduate from the college by 2011, and so far my biggest challenge has been juggling work and school respectively. My advice to students enrolling for the first time at Bermuda College is to be vigilant toward their studies, to manage their time, and to always be prepared to offer their own unique insight into the learning experience. Some may believe that their experience does not count but this is so untrue, I have found that learning is about bringing something of ourselves into the classroom as well as taking information when we leave.
I believe that the Bermuda College offers something for everyone, from the part-time student needing to become accredited, to the person seeking to go overseas and pursue higher learning. I think that the ratio of older to younger students helps to encourage the young people to become more studious and to reach higher in their educational pursuits. I also feel that the College offers all the academic help needed for a person to succeed.
One of my favourite quotes comes from the well known businessmen and author, Malcolm Forbes, who said "Failure is success if we learn from it."
