Certificate in Child Care

THE CERTIFICATE IN CHILD CARE WAS DEVELOPED IN PARTNERSHIP WITH
BERMUDA COLLEGE, AND PRIVATE NURSERY SCHOOL OWNERS

Students will be prepared to work as child care givers. Students will engage in theoretical and practical experiences to acquire the knowledge, competencies, and skills required to work in nursery school, private pre-schools. Topics covered are: Stages of Child Development, Interpersonal Communications, Health and Safety, and Learning Environments. The certificate culminates with a two week internship in an approved childcare setting.
 
Entry Requirements
Students entering this programme must have strong basic skills in English, mathematics and Microsoft Word. Potential students will be assessed. Those needing support in English and or math must successfully complete these requirements prior to enrolling in the programme.
 
 
Interpersonal Communication for Childcare Assistants  CCP 810
This course aims to promote the development of the communications skills required to build effective relationships with children, parents, and colleagues The course seeks to promote a range of core competencies in the areas of effective communication skills, positive discipline, and personal awareness
 
Introduction to Health & Safety                                     CCP 820
This course introduces students to health and safety issues affecting children. Students will develop an understanding of childhood physical and developmental health; child abuse and neglect; safe play environments; special needs; and, the public health regulations governing care facilities
 
Stages of Child Development                                         CCP 815
This course explores the range of issues and stages of child development from birth through age 8. Students will focus on the emotional, intellectual, physiological, social, and cultural factors, and how they impact care-giving and instructional practices.
 
Learning Environments                                                    CCP 825
This is a comprehensive competency based course focusing on developmentally appropriate activities and programming. Students will examine the range of activities suited to children from 0 to eight years old.
 
Practicum                                                                          CCP 826
Students will engage in practical experiences working with children for a two week period in an approved setting under the guidance of a teacher while applying the skills and competencies learned throughout the programme.
 
Application & Registration Process
Complete the Bermuda College Application form and submit it to the PACE Office (forms can be collected from Bermuda College Information Desk or downloaded from the Bermuda College website; www.college.bm)
Take the Computerized Placement Test (CPT) at Bermuda College - call 236-9000 ext 4207 to make an appointment. NOTE: You must indicate that you are applying to the Certificate in Child Care Programme. You can practice for the CPT by checking out this website: www.accuplacer.com.
Register and pay for classes.
